A look at the requirements for foreign media immigrant visas

California residents with an interest in issues surrounding temporary visas may want to know more about a certain type of immigration visa. This visa allows those working with foreign media companies to enter the country; however, there are specific requirements that must be met in order to be approved for entry.

Foreign reporters, camera crews and other media professionals may be eligible for a special nonimmigrant visa. This visa allows those media employees to enter the United States along with their spouse and any children who are under the age of 21. There are three requirements for approval of this visa. First, the applicant must represent a foreign media company, which could be in the film, radio, news media or other industries. Next, the applicant must be entering the country specifically to practice in that profession. Lastly, the applicant must be affiliated with the media company's office in a foreign country.

Generally, the foreign media employee can apply for this type of visa at the U.S. Embassy in their home country. Failure to acquire the proper visa for working as a foreign media correspondent could result in the person being stopped by U.S. Homeland Security upon entry into the United States. The length of the stay is determined by the Customs and Border Protection officer who processes the immigrant's entry. However, this length may be extended by filing a particular form and providing whatever evidence is required, along with the appropriate fee.

For those in specialty occupations, a lawyer may be able to help them with the visa application process. This can allow them to work in the U.S. under that temporary visa. The attorney may also help in the application process for a permanent visa or residency in the U.S.
