Immigration detention up in the U.S.

On Behalf of | Aug 7, 2017 | Immigration Detention |

Among the things some individuals from other countries can end up facing in connection to immigration matters in the U.S. is time in immigration detention. There are a range of situations in which a person could end up being detained by immigration officials. Recent data points to the number of people who are under such detention being on the increase in the U.S. in recent times.

The statistics looked at what the per-day average for number of individuals in U.S. immigration detention has been in the 2017 fiscal year, based on data from the opening few months of this fiscal year (Oct. 3, 2016 to Mar. 20, 2017). The average for this fiscal year has come in 17 percent higher than the average for fiscal year 2016.

Where are U.S. immigration detainees held? Many are held in locally-operated facilities or private facilities. There are multiple such facilities here in California. For the U.S. as a whole, the type of facility that has held the highest percentage of the country’s immigration detainees in recent times are private facilities.

Why has immigration detention been up in the U.S. recently? Multiple factors may be at play in this, including:

  • Increased immigration arrests.
  • Increased immigration court backlogs.
  • New automatic detention policies.

Many expect that the trend of increased immigration detention levels will continue. If such increases do continue, one wonders what impacts this will have on the conditions for immigrant detainees and the types of issues that come up for such detainees. Immigration attorneys can assist immigrant detainees here in California with addressing issues and concerns they have related to their detention and the immigration matters underlying it.
