With the recent election of Donald Trump as the next United States President, fear among immigrants has sky-rocketed. California hosts more than 10 million foreign-born residents, more than any other state in the union. However, during a recent 60 Minutes interview, Mr. Trump seemed to have narrowed his scope somewhat. He stated that he was concerned with the removal of criminal immigrants, rather than all unauthorized individuals. So, at this time, it’s largely unknown who DHS will target, and how. This has spurred California leaders to voice their rejection of an anti-immigration stance by the government, on any level.
California and Immigration
California is a state known for its friendly treatment of immigrants. This has not changed, and is perhaps evident now more than ever. The 2013 Trust Act asserted this state’s right to protect foreign-born individuals from deportation if they had committed minor infractions or violations. Officials fought federal demands to hold incarcerated immigrants for deportation. Again and again, California demonstrated the importance and strength of local and state governments in fighting overbearing federal immigration laws. And it’s evident that California leaders will continue to do so.
