California among the top states for refugees/asylees

On Behalf of | Dec 5, 2016 | Asylum |

The federal government recently released data on new refugees and asylees here in the U.S. in 2015. The statistics point to California being one of the top states for such individuals.

According to the statistics, in 2015, 69,920 people were given admission into the U.S. on refugee status. Of these, 5,718 came to California. This makes up over 8 percent of the total. This put California as the No. 2 state for such individuals. The one state that saw more refugees come to it in 2015 was Texas. That state’s total was 7,479.

As a note, between 2013 and 2015, there has been a decrease in the number of new refugees coming to California.

Meanwhile, 17,878 people were granted asylum affirmatively here in America in 2015. Over 42 percent of these individuals, 7,595 in total, lived in California. When it came to individuals granted asylum affirmatively here in the U.S. in 2015, no state had more than California.

Unlike with refugees, California saw increases between 2013 and 2015 in the number of new affirmative asylees in the state.

As this recent data underscores, many refugees and asylees live here in California. Many different kinds of immigration issues could end up arising for such individuals during their time here in America. This could include issues related to their family. It could also include issues related to changing their immigration status. It could also include paperwork issues. Skilled lawyers can advise refugees and asylees here in California on their options when such issues come up.
